24 months without a post

It seems that for the last two years I’ve just been too busy and not had enough to say.

So for now I’m going to put my old blog on hold, it’s still up for viewing here but I won’t be updating it for the foreseeable future.

In the meantime, you can find my latest info and up to date contact details at http://www.desflynn.com

Ouch!

Dog hospitalised for being over the limit

image

A dog was admitted to a veterinary clinic in Austria at the weekend, barely able to stand on his own four paws and reeking "like a beer hall."

The dog had dreadful wind and diarrhea and was vomiting a lot," vet Karl Hofbauer said.

Tests indicated that the dog had a blood alcohol content of 1.6 milligrams per 100 millilitres. But that was not the result of Dingo having one drink too many, the owner insisted.

The hungry pooch had stolen and secretly devoured half a kilogramme of fresh yeast dough from the kitchen. Alcohol had formed inside his stomach as a result of the fermentation process, leaving poor old Dingo stone drunk.

Bloody dogs these days, with their drink and drugs…

wouldn’t be ashamed labeling sulfuric acid "delicious baby formula."

I can attest, it’s true!

At least I didn’t join MyFace

You kinda go crazy when you break your leg.  I’ve been sitting on my arse for 7 weeks now and it’s definitely not doing me any good.

After being sane and logical and reasoned (allegedly) for years, I got bored and jumped on this "Social Networking" bandwagon.  But it wasn’t all my fault. Honest.  Mulcahy made me do it.  He stuck the video of the first day testing the Shedsport civic for the 2008 forestry championship up on his Bebo page.  Which is private. GRRR.

So I caved in to get at it.  And while I was at it, I set up a Facebook profile as well.  Might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb ;)

If yer interested, Links are on the right…

Happy New Year!

Miro – The free open-source video platform

video player

I’ve started to use a fantastic free piece of software called Miro.  It can automatically download and play tv shows off the web.    Since it has Bittorrent and rss support, it’s easy to add an rss feed of your favourite shows and it simply downloads the newest episode every time it’s released.

And it’s so easy to use!  Probably pushing it for absolute non-nerds, but if there’s even a glimmer there, you’re in luck…

Have a look – www.getmiro.com

Laziness rules!

The Mini Power Minder is an eco-friendly device that can actually make your life easier. You plug your computer in the primary outlet, along with a USB. When you turn off your computer, the second plug turns off automatically.  This is the perfect solution for those running printers, desk lamps, and all sorts of other stuff we might generally be too lazy to turn off. Sure, the $14.95 device only has one automatic plug, but there’s no reason you couldn’t stick a power strip into the socket*.

*Gizmodo assumes no liability should you burn your house down.

An excellent idea.  I’ll be ordering one ;)

Samhna

We got a new pup yesterday, a beautiful Kerry Blue by the name of Samhna. Well, official name’s Polly View, but it’s november, so Samhain or Samhna seemed apt.

Cute doggie, loves exploring. She’s got bloody sharp teeth tho!!!

Mediawiki + WAMP: A useful How To

Lifehacker have a great how-to showing how to install MediaWiki (The software that runs Wikipedia) on a local PC using a piece of software called WAMP.  WAMP is a useful tool that installs Apache, PHP and MySQL like PHPTriad used to do in the past.

The wiki could be useful for any number of things, IT infrastructure documentation, Procedures in a workplace, Best Practices for writing a blog, writing styles etc.  Oh, or maybe some kind of a giant encyclopedia :D

Cintq digital drawing tablet

Based on comics master Scott McCloud’s recommendation (below), I bought a Cintiq. It does something I’ve always wanted to do since I first saw a computer. This thing is a pen-based tablet that doubles as a monitor. In other words you draw directly on the tablet, just like a paper-based drawing, but digitally. In fact the surface of the Cintq monitor/tablet feels like paper under a pen. Synchrony of image with your movements is almost exact, and the micro difference doesn’t seem to matter. The result is weirdly like ink, or paint, but with all the control and magic of Photoshop. Of course, as a monitor, it will display whatever’s on your computer, whether it’s animation software or a spreadsheet. (You could hook it up to a $500 Mac Mini and have a fabulous digital art studio.) It’s slowly being adopted by film animators and other high-end graphic professionals. A Cintq is expensive ($2,500), big, thick and bulky (it is too fat to sit on your lap like other tablets, but it can lay flat on a desk), but if you are producing digital images for a living, it speeds up your productivity and eases your hurt. It’s fun to use.

Oh, if I only had 2500 bucks!
